Carson was evaluated for reading today. He is reading at upper 2nd grade level. And his math is around 1st grade. See, he misses the cutoff by 16 days. We've heard so much about it being best for boys to be the oldest in their class....and such... so we've waited. He's been reading for a year now. He loves Kindergarten. But I don't know what to do!!!!
we'll get together Friday with the K teacher and the 1st grade teacher and the reading lady and the superintendent and discuss this! I like the kids that are in Kindergarten...but I don't want him to be bored... it is hard to tell in the first 2 weeks of school anyway. I guess we'll see what the teachers think. Maybe he can go to 1st for reading and math...but then why not go all day to 1st?!? Maybe we should see where he is the most comfortable...
Anyway...just had to get that off my chest.. any advice would be greatly appriciated!

Just taking a break from housecleaning (yes, at 11:30 at night) and checking on blogs. Saw your post and wanted to send a comment your way. Ryan is old for his class...his birthday is in December so he turned six just a few months after starting Kindergarten. He also reads several grades above grade level and his math is the same. I don't know how your district does it, but ours teaches according to ability. The teachers test all of the kids...and then divide them between a lower group, middle and high. When it came time for reading and math, he'd go to the teacher that taught the highest group. It works SO well...and i haven't heard anyone complain about it. The slower kids aren't lost, and upper kids aren't bored. He's done great all of these years, is challenged and is able to stay with his friends in his grade level. Have a great evening! ~Katie
homeschool him!!!!!!
Since Elliott wouldn't do kindergarten last year, he's now the oldest in his class, and he's reading way above grade level. Our school is very resistant to letting them skip grades, or even go to other grades for some subjects. The only consolation I have is that Elliott is in a home where he gets lots of encouragement and chances to read. If you feel he would do better hanging out with the kindergarten kids, I'm sure he'll still progress in reading... but, like you say, you don't want him to be bored by school. So, no answers here, but I definitely share your concerns! Good luck! :-)
How did the meeting go? I just saw your post and maybe my input isn't necessary anymore. My Carson is a November guy, also older for his grade. His kindergarten teacher really challenged him and was able to work to the different abilities of the group so he was always engaged. In 1st grade he went into the gifted program and it has been really neat to see what he is capable of. He just rises to the occasion as most children do when they get the opportunity. If you aren't worried about your Carson socially, and since he is already older for his grade, I would say challenge him! Such a great problem to have, right?!
Lovely cakes, and Carson looks so grown up! Aubrey, too! You are making so many wonderful memories for them. =)
Good luck with school, I'm sure as you go along you'll either feel comfortable with how things are going, or you'll start to feel that a change needs to be made.
Julia is a November girl, and should be in K this fall. But she has too many skills for K, and not quite enough for 1st in my opinion. Even though we homeschool, it's still a challenge, because materials are leveled. So I'm improvising and she's doing a little of both. =) Part of the problem is that Aidan, who would be in K next year, is reading better than she is. So they both school together, 1st grade math for both, more difficult writing for her, more difficult reading for him. And all the while, my goal is to keep them interested and yet to avoid them feeling constantly pushed. Balance!!! =)
Good luck to you!
